Consultando a la IA VI

Siguiendo con mi serie sobre la IA, hoy he querido hacer un guiño al día del libro, 23 de Abril, día en el que homenajeamos a esos dos escritores de la antigüedad que murieron el mismo día (o casi), Shakespeare y Cervantes (23 y 22 de Abril de 1616). 

Hay que decir que cada día se leen menos libros, o al menos es lo que dicen las estadísticas, pero además cada vez se escribe menos, y no lo digo por los escritores, si no por la gente de a pie. 

La IA nos hace los resúmenes por nosotros, así que no necesitamos escribir, y si además se encarga de leernos los textos, y hacernos un resumen, al final ni leemos ni escribimos. Utilicemos de vez en cuando esa inteligencia natural que todavía nos queda, y sentémonos a leer un buen libro por nosotros mismos. Disfrutemos de ese pequeño e intenso placer que la IA nos quiere arrebatar. Aunque no soy de poner links externos, hoy día del libro, me acordaba de un sketch antiguo sobre los problemas que tuvieron en la edad media con el paso del pergamino al libro, y la ayuda que necesitaban del "HelpDesk". Continuing with my series on AI, today I wanted to acknowledge World Book Day, April 23rd, the day we honor those two ancient writers who died on the same day (or almost): Shakespeare and Cervantes (April 23rd and 22nd, 1616). 

It must be said that fewer and fewer books are being read each day, or at least that's what the statistics say. But what's more, less and less is being written, and I'm not referring to writers, but to ordinary people. 

AI summarizes things for us, so we don't need to write, and if it also reads texts to us and summarizes them, in the end we neither read nor write. Let's use that natural intelligence we still possess from time to time, and sit down to read a good book ourselves. Let's enjoy that small, intense pleasure that AI wants to take away from us. 

Although I don't usually post external links, today, on World Book Day, I remembered an old sketch about the problems people had in the Middle Ages transitioning from parchment to books, and the help they needed from the Help Desk. Aunque la IA nos ayude con muchas cosas, no siempre nos va a dar toda la información. A veces no hemos hecho la pregunta correcta, o no hemos pedido bien ciertos detalles. Sea como fuere, el resultado de la IA puede ser complementado con ideas propias, utilizando eso que cada vez abunda menos, que es la inteligencia natural.

Leía hace poco que los trabajos universitarios cada vez se parecen más entre sí, y es que están hechos todos con IA, y por lo tanto son muy parecidos, y como no añadimos nada de nuestra cosecha, el resultado es que cada vez pensamos menos. Aprovechemos que todavía nos queda alguna neurona útil, y seamos diferentes

Although AI helps us with many things, it won't always give us all the information. Sometimes we haven't asked the right question, or we haven't requested certain details properly. In any case, the AI's output can be complemented with our own ideas, using that increasingly rare resource: natural intelligence.

I recently read that university papers are becoming more and more alike, and that's because they're all done with AI, and therefore very similar. Since we don't add anything of our own, the result is that we think less and less. Let's take advantage of the fact that we still have a few useful neurons left, and let's be different.

¡ En ocasiones veo muertos ! Mítica frase de la película "El sexto sentido", que denominaremos "alucinaciones". Eso es precisamente lo que la IA hace de vez en cuando. Si no conoce la respuesta, se la inventa. A esto también se le denomina "alucinaciones". Lo curioso es que esa respuesta inventada, te la presenta con total seguridad y coherencia, como si fuera el mayor experto en ese tema. Es como en la vida real, cuando preguntas en tu trabajo a alguien que se supone que es el experto, y como no conoce la respuesta, se la inventa. En esto la IA también aprende.

If it doesn't know the answer, it makes one up. This is also called "hallucinations." The curious thing is that it presents this invented answer with complete certainty and coherence, as if it were the leading expert on the subject. It's like in real life, when you ask someone at work who's supposed to be the expert, and since they don't know the answer, they make one up. AI learns in this way too.

Claramente la IA no puede hacerlo todo, pero si nos da unas pautas para hacer una parte y facilitarnos la vida, pues estupendo. La semana pasada dejábamos al protagonista del dibujo sin ayuda, pero finalmente la IA ha hecho algo por él.

Recuerdo cuando alguien de mi equipo venía con un problema y me lo contaba, y mientras lo hacía se daba cuenta de la solución, y se iba tan contento, como si yo le hubiera ayudado en algo, cuando lo único que había hecho era escucharle. Saber escuchar a tu equipo es fundamental para motivar. Ellos son los expertos, pero esperan que si tienen un problema, les ayudes con la solución o con la toma de decisiones.

Clearly, AI can't do everything, but if it gives us guidelines for doing a part of the job and makes our lives easier, then fantastic. Last week, we left the cartoon character without help, but finally, AI did something for him.

I remember when someone on my team would come to me with a problem and explain it, and while they were doing so, they'd figure out the solution and leave so happy, as if I had actually helped them, when all I had done was listen. Knowing how to listen to your team is fundamental for motivation. They are the experts, but they expect that if they have a problem, you'll help them with the solution or with the decision-making process.

Ayer estuve en el Retail Forum, y tuve la oportunidad de escuchar varias conferencias, y de volver a ver a un montón de personas conocidas, tanto antiguos compañeros, como proveedores. El evento estaba muy bien organizado, con varias salas simultáneas de conferencias y stands de proveedores y fabricantes. 

En las conferencias, uno de los temas de los que más oí hablar es de la IA, y de todas las optimizaciones que se están consiguiendo gracias a esta herramienta, que ha venido para quedarse e intentar agilizar procesos y facilitarnos la vida con tareas repetitivas.

Pero todavía quedan profesiones donde la IA no puede ayudarnos, sobre todo en aquellas donde hay que utilizar las manos, más que la cabeza. Siempre puedes preguntar a la IA como cambiar un grifo, pero como no seas un poco manitas, igual inundas la casa, así que tendremos que seguir llamando a los profesionales para que hagan de "IA" y nos faciliten la vida.

Yesterday I was at the Retail Forum, and I had the opportunity to attend several conferences and reconnect with many familiar faces, including former colleagues and suppliers. The event was very well organized, with several simultaneous conference rooms and booths for suppliers and manufacturers.

At the conferences, one of the most frequently discussed topics was AI and all the optimizations being achieved thanks to this technology, which is here to stay and aims to streamline processes and simplify our lives with repetitive tasks.

However, there are still professions where AI can't help us, especially those that require more hands-on skills than brainpower. You can always ask AI how to change a faucet, but unless you're a bit handy, you might flood the house, so we'll have to continue calling on professionals to act as "AI" and make our lives easier.

Desgraciadamente otra guerra ha aparecido en el tablero internacional, y como todas ellas, las consecuencias se van a expandir por todo el globo. El gas y la gasolina empiezan dispararse en precio, y por mucho que trate de calmar las aguas el presunto Nobel de la Paz, la realidad le está pasando por encima, y por ende, a todos nosotros.

Esto es sólo el principio, porque si suben los combustibles, suben los transportes, y las mercancías, y la cesta de la compra ... Pero esto son sólo las consecuencias económicas, en el área del conflicto hay pérdidas humanas, que son irreparables.

El humor nos ayuda a sobrellevar estos momentos, aunque la situación no tenga ninguna gracia.

Unfortunately, another war has erupted on the international stage, and like all wars, its consequences will spread across the globe. Gas and gasoline prices are skyrocketing, and no matter how much the would-be Nobel Peace Prize laureate tries to calm the waters, reality is overtaking him, and consequently, all of us.

This is just the beginning, because if fuel prices rise, so do transportation costs, goods, and the cost of groceries... But these are only the economic consequences; in the conflict zone, there are irreparable human losses.

Humor helps us cope with these times, even though the situation is anything but funny.

Homenaje a Fernando Onega

Hoy he querido hacer un pequeño homenaje a Fernando Onega, que esta semana cerraba su micrófono, aunque su voz quedará en el recuerdo de los que ya tenemos una edad. Un periodista con una voz carismática, que llenaba los espacios, que escuchabas y ponías atención en lo que decía. De los que nacieron sin internet, donde antes de dar una noticia se documentaban, conocían la historia, y eran objetivos.

Hoy escuchamos tertulianos gritando, pisándose unos a otros y haciendo espectáculo más que periodismo. Esas tertulias que cuando las oyes, cambias de canal y pones cualquier otra cosa, aunque sea un documental sobre la cría del gamusino en cautividad.

Esta semana despedimos a uno de los grandes. DEP

Today I wanted to pay a small tribute to Fernando Onega, who this week passed away, though his voice will remain in the memories of those of us who are a bit older. A journalist with a charismatic voice, he filled the airwaves, and you listened attentively to what he said. He was one of those who were born before the internet, who researched before reporting a story, knew the history, and remained objective.

Today we hear pundits shouting, interrupting each other, and making a spectacle of themselves rather than doing journalism. These are the kinds of talk shows that make you want to change the channel and put on something else, even a documentary about breeding snipes in captivity.

This week we say goodbye to one of the greats. Rest in peace.
