El noticiario XIII

Ya han pasado 20 días de la crisis en Ceuta, y todo sigue igual. Las imágenes que nos llegan y las noticias que leemos están muy lejos de la normalidad que nos quiere hacer creer el Gobierno. Que entiendo que está enterado de la situación por lo que le cuentan, porque en una situación como esta, deberían estar allí todos, y no de vacaciones. Es lo que haría cualquier persona responsable de cualquier empresa ante una crisis, ponerse al frente y en primera línea, hasta que se resuelva. Entiendo que una crisis como esta desborda a cualquiera, pero al menos hay que tener la moralidad suficiente para hacer lo imposible por arreglarlo y no estar de fiesta en el eclipse o de vacaciones. Espero, aunque no confío, que la situación se resuelva lo antes posible, y que los ceutís puedan disfrutar de su ciudad. Fuerza y ánimo.

Twenty days have passed since the crisis began in Ceuta, and everything remains the same. The images we see and the news we read are far removed from the normality the government wants us to believe. I understand they are aware of the situation from what they are told, because in a situation like this, everyone should be there, not on vacation. That's what any responsible person in any company would do in a crisis: take the lead and be on the front lines until it's resolved. I understand that a crisis like this overwhelms anyone, but at least one should have the moral authority to do everything possible to fix it and not be partying during the eclipse or on vacation. I hope, though I don't have complete faith, that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible, and that the people of Ceuta can enjoy their city again. Stay strong and keep your spirits up.

Ayer 12 de Agosto fue el día del eclipse, el día que llevábamos esperando desde hacia semanas. Todo el mundo con sus gafas preparadas, menos algunos rezagados que tuvieron que buscarlas debajo de las piedras porque estaban agotadas, yo entre ellos. Aunque al final las conseguí. Me pareció un momento mágico, que no te imaginas hasta que no lo ves. Creo que es algo espectacular que hemos tenido la suerte de poder ver, y que repetiremos en los próximos años. Recuerdo cuando éramos niños y mirábamos al sol con una radiografía o una película de carrete, o una diapositiva. No entiendo como no hemos tenido más problemas de visión. Ahora, afortunadamente, todo está más controlado y podemos evitar males mayores. Aunque es recomendable quitarse las gafas después del eclipse, porque si no lo haces, no verás nada fuera de lo común en Ceuta, no verás los casos de corrupción, etc... Y es que como dice el refrán, no hay peor ciego que el que no quiere ver.

Yesterday, August 12th, was the day of the eclipse, the day we'd been waiting for for weeks. Everyone had their glasses ready, except for a few stragglers who had to search high and low because they were sold out—myself included. Although I finally managed to get some. It seemed like a magical moment, something you can't imagine until you see it. I think it's a spectacular event that we were lucky enough to witness, and one we'll repeat in the coming years. I remember when we were children and we looked at the sun with an X-ray film, a roll of film, or a slide. I don't understand how we didn't have more vision problems. Now, fortunately, everything is more controlled, and we can avoid more serious issues. Although it's advisable to take off your glasses after the eclipse, because if you don't, you won't see anything out of the ordinary in Ceuta, you won't see the corruption cases, etc... And as the saying goes, there's none so blind as those who will not see.

 Ya estamos en Agosto, el mes de vacaciones por excelencia. Aunque este año hay gente que no puede irse de vacaciones. Unos porque no se lo pueden permitir, otros porque lo han perdido todo en los incendios que han asolado España, y otros porque su ciudad ha sido invadida. Pero sigue habiendo muchos que disfrutarán de unos días de descanso,  comiendo bien, y no como los militares de Ceuta, y teniendo todo el mar para ellos con una zona de exclusión que ya les gustarías a los ceutíes. Sirva este dibujo como un homenaje a todos ellos y a los que cuidado del orden en la ciudad.

It's August, the quintessential holiday month. Although this year some people can't go on vacation. Some because they can't afford it, others because they've lost everything in the fires that have ravaged Spain, and still others because their city has been invaded. But there are still many who will enjoy a few days of rest, eating well, unlike the soldiers in Ceuta, and having the entire sea to themselves with an exclusion zone that the people of Ceuta would envy. Let this drawing serve as a tribute to all of them and to those who maintain order in the city.

Estos últimos días hemos sufrido la mayor ola de incendios que podamos recordar. La superficie quemada nos dice que si no ponemos remedio, la realidad superará a la ficción de mi dibujo. No es un dibujo nuevo, pero quería volver a publicarlo como un recordatorio de lo que nos puede ocurrir. En momentos como este siempre aparece la solidaridad de empresas y gente de a pie que quiere ayudar, de voluntarios que ayudan en el fuego y de instituciones que intentar unir esfuerzos. Lo malo es que cuando el fuego se controla, las instituciones vuelven a la normalidad y ya sólo piensan en sí mismos, y ver si pueden hundir al opositor. Si no hacemos algo, nos quedamos sin bosques, y eso debe hacerse antes de que llegue el fuego.

These past few days we've suffered the worst wave of wildfires in living memory. The burned area tells us that if we don't take action, reality will surpass the fiction of my drawing. It's not a new drawing, but I wanted to republish it as a reminder of what could happen to us. In times like these, solidarity always emerges from businesses and ordinary people who want to help, from volunteers who assist in fighting the fires, and from institutions that try to join forces. The problem is that once the fire is under control, the institutions return to normal and only think about themselves, and how they can bring down their opponents. If we don't do something, we'll be left without forests, and that action must be taken before the fire arrives.

A los que nos gusta nadar, preferimos que el agua está más fresquita. Para tandas largas alrededor de 24 grados, a ser posible. Entiendo que a los niños y algunos mayores (entre los cuales no me identifico), esta temperatura les pueda agradar, porque pueden estar horas en el agua sin salir tiritando. 

Claramente para el medio ambiente no es bueno. Las plantas marinas se mueren, los peces se irán a otras aguas más frías, y otras especies aparecerán. Habrá más medusas. Cambia el ecosistema. Y eso sin contar las tormentas o las DANAs que llegarán. No sé si se podrá revertir en algún momento, pero hasta entonces intentaré seguir nadando sin neopreno de amianto.

 Those of us who enjoy swimming prefer cooler water. For longer sessions, around 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), if possible. I understand that children and some older people (among whom I don't count myself) might find this temperature pleasant, as they can stay in the water for hours without getting shivering.

Clearly, this isn't good for the environment. Marine plants die, fish migrate to cooler waters, and new species appear. There will be more jellyfish. The ecosystem changes. And that's without even considering the storms or DANAs (isolated depressions at high levels) that will inevitably arrive. I don't know if this can ever be reversed, but until then, I'll try to keep swimming without an asbestos wetsuit.

Reconozco que no soy muy futbolero, pero este año he visto algún partido. Y veré la final. Este mundial no ha estado exento de política, como la famosa tarjeta roja que Trump consiguió que anularan con su amigo Infantino, pero eso no ha conseguido empañar el orgullo y la satisfacción de millones de aficionados en todo el mundo. La final también tiene su miga, porque el presidente de los EEUU es muy amigo de Milei, y a nosotros no nos tiene en gran estima, como ha dicho en varias ocasiones, pero el fútbol es otra cosa, y ahí serán los jugadores  y el árbitro los que decidirán el final. Que gane el mejor, y si es España, mejor que mejor ...

I admit I'm not much of a football fan, but I've watched a few matches this year. And I'll watch the final. This World Cup hasn't been without its political undertones, like the infamous red card that Trump managed to get overturned with the help of his friend Infantino, but that hasn't managed to tarnish the pride and satisfaction of millions of fans worldwide. The final also has its own twists and turns, because the US president is a close friend of Milei, and he doesn't hold us in high regard, as he's said on several occasions, but football is different, and the players and the referee will decide the outcome. May the best team win, and if it's Spain, all the better...

Hay personas que tienen una capacidad innata para decir una cosa y la contraria casi en la misma frase, o en pocos minutos. Dan bandazos de opinión, según les mueva el aire su flequillo. Tranquilizan o asustan según su bipolaridad aparezca. Pero claro, eso tiene un problema para ellos, y es que nadie se fía de lo que dice, porque saben que en un rato, o al día siguiente dirá lo contrario, según sus intereses. Creo que es una habilidad que tienen los que se dedican a la política, independientemente de su nacionalidad, así que tampoco tenemos que irnos tan lejos.

Some people have an innate ability to say one thing and its opposite almost in the same sentence, or within minutes. They swing wildly in their opinions, depending on the breeze. They can be reassuring or frightening depending on when their bipolarity flares. But of course, this presents a problem for them: nobody trusts what they say, because they know that in a little while, or the next day, they'll say the opposite, depending on their own interests. I think it's a skill that those involved in politics possess, regardless of their nationality, so we don't have to look that far afield.
